Prime Video’s new Australian World War’s two romantic drama has critics who are excited, but it seems that the audience is still continuing to discover the epic show.
While the show was released on one of the best streaming services far back on April 18, The narrow road to the deep north Have struggled to get viewing with the show yet to top the cards in one of the countries it is available in (it is not currently available to stream in England).
However, it is not a mark on its quality, with viewers who have seen the praise series, and critics paid tribute to it as one of the best Prime video shows at the moment that crown the drama with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Co-made and instructed by Assassin’s Creed Helmer Justin Kyrzel, The narrow road to the deep north Follows WW2 soldier Dorrigo Evans over three periods of time: Before his deployment, during his time as prisoners of war and as an older man in the 1980s, with Jacob Elordi portraying the younger version and Ciarán Hinds, who plays the older Dorrigo.
Both beautiful and brutal, the series maps Dorrigo’s love affair with his uncle’s wife Amy (Odessa Young) before the war, and how that love both maintains and haunts him in his uncompromising time in a Burmese pow camp. Later in life, Dorrigo is a reverent surgeon and war hero who struggles with ghosts from his past and the guilt he feels both over the affair and as a survivor of one of the most brutal theaters of World War II.
Based on Richard Flanagan’s novel of the same name, the show takes place over five gripping episodes and jumps between the three timelines to tell an intricate woven story that is rooted by excellent performances from Elordi and Hinds, which at times makes love to seem as brutally painful as war.
What do the critics say about the narrow path to the deep north?
With a perfect score over on the rat Tomatoes, it is not surprising that the critical response has been glowing. The Guardian Called the show “Elegant and Poetic” as he praised the complementary depictions of Dorrigo of the two main actors, and said both “really feel like different reflections of the same person.”
New York TimesMeanwhile, called Elordi’s performance “Terrific”, while indicating the series overall masterfully “combines a sweet doomed romance, a layered domestic drama, and a upscining 2nd World War II.” The BBC also praised the young lead and said the drama was a “fantastic showcase for Jacob Elordi.”
What do the subscribers think?
Rotten Tomatoes’ audience score may not be that strong, but still sits on a respectable 70%. Over at Reddit, however, viewers love the show, with a post that says “It was perfect […] worth every minute of my time. “
