Two police officers killed when trailer rammed into mobile van on Super Highway

Police say the driver was arrested; he told investigators he fell asleep while driving, which led to the crash

KARACHI:

A speeding dump truck rammed into a police mobile van deployed for checking near Chakwal Pump on the Super Highway (Hyderabad-Karachi road) on Monday, killing a sub-inspector and a constable, police said. The driver has been arrested.

According to the police, a 22-wheeler trailer hit the stationary police mobile during a routine check at around 05.40 and killed two officers on the spot. A third officer survived the incident. The impact was so severe that the police car was crushed and pinned under the trailer.

Police said the driver, identified as Shahabuddin, was arrested. In his initial statement, he reportedly told investigators that he fell asleep while driving, which led to the crash. Rescue 1122 and Edhi volunteers reached the spot along with ambulances after being alerted. The highway police also assisted in the rescue operation.

Heavy machinery, including a crane and hoists, were used to pull apart the wreckage and retrieve the bodies from the wrecked vehicle.

According to the police, Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan, Constable Parwarish and Constable Wajid were on duty in the police mobile when the trailer hit them.

Sub-Inspector Sahib Khan died on the spot while Constable Wajid was caught in critical condition and later succumbed to his injuries during the rescue operation. Constable Parwarish remained unhurt.

The bodies of the deceased personnel were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital and a private hospital near Gadap City police station. Both were posted at Gadap City Police Station.
