The first round of the 2026 US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club was hit by an unexpected upset.
The match was delayed by dense fog that rolled in, forcing the umpires to call off the match after 30 minutes after the initial tee shot.
The horn blew at 7:05 a.m. ET, and all activity ceased as conditions became much more difficult to see. It turned out that only 14 out of 156 players were able to finish a hole at the time of the break, and there was not even a birdie on the scoreboard.
The game resumed at 9:05 ET after a delay of exactly two hours. The US Open’s X account announced the restart, noting that the practice range was open in the morning.
Despite play resuming, golfers still face challenges. The National Weather Service has indicated a 40% chance of precipitation and possible thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 30 mph.
The last time the first round of the US Open was postponed due to fog was in 2021 at Torrey Pines, and the delay lasted 90 minutes. Friday will be characterized by clouds giving way to clear skies, while Saturday and Sunday will be mostly sunny with winds between 10-20 mph.
