Former NFL agent Ben Dogra slams NCAA for NIL chaos

As name, image and likeness (NIL) deals have taken over college sports, player and coach moves have become as frantic as ever.

Former NFL agent Ben Dogra said the NCAA isn’t doing its job and the colleges aren’t capable of governing themselves, which he said is why Congress needs to get involved.

“I always think less government is better. You shouldn’t have the government involved unless you need to. I don’t think they should be involved. But who wants to be involved? The NCAA is clearly not doing their job. And you can’t have these colleges decide for themselves,” Dogra told Pakinomist Digital in a recent interview.

Dogra was referencing Washington quarterback Demond Williams Jr., who reversed his decision to transfer when his $4 million deal shook the program.

“It will be difficult to penalize these players for moving because it is a business and they have the right to move from school to school,” Dogra said. “It’s no different than the coaches. The coaches do the same thing. I find it very fascinating that the quarterback at the University of Washington who signed for $4 million would give it up and go somewhere else for ($6 million.).”

Dogra said head coach Jedd Fisch was not happy about the prospect of losing Williams to the transfer portal, but that Fisch himself was looking at other jobs.

“The head coach wasn’t very happy about it, but it’s the same head coach, Jedd Fisch, who wanted the Florida job and wanted the Michigan job. So what’s good for the goose isn’t good for the goose? And now you’re bringing the kid back because you’re threatening a lawsuit because he broke the contract. Well, do you want that player to continue playing in your locker room in Washington? Be really careful. You might be killing your own culture, because why couldn’t the kid move and break the contract if the coaches are, says Dogra.

Dogra then wondered whether contracts in such a situation are enforceable across state lines.

“Should these contracts be enforced from state to state? Who actually regulates them? So unless you have something that’s uniform across the board, and I think that’s where they’re talking about getting Congress involved, we really don’t know much until there’s a test case, and we haven’t had a major test case,” he said.

Dogra referenced Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney ripping into Ole Miss head coach Pete Golding for trying to poach his players. The former agent said navigating NIL is like the Wild West.

Dogra represented Adrian Peterson, Patrick Willis, Mario Williams and Richard Sherman in his career.
