An Air India aircraft went to London with more than 240 people on board crashed near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in India’s western city of Ahmedabad, minutes after starting from India’s Ahmedabad on Thursday, the airline said and police without specifying if there was any death.
The plane was on its way to Gatwick Airport in the UK, Air India said, while police officers said it crashed into a civilian area near the airport.
The aviation tracking site Flightradar24 said the aircraft was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, one of the most modern passenger aircraft in operation.
“At this moment we find the details and will share additional updates,” Air India said at X.
The accident occurred when the plane started, TV reported. A channel showed that the plane started over a residential area and then disappeared from the screen before a huge cloud of fire rose in the sky over the houses.
Visuals also showed garbage on fire, where thick black smoke rose in the sky near the airport. They also showed visuals of people who were moved into stretcher and taken away in ambulances.
A total of 242 people were aboard the flight, the news agency Ani reported, citing Gujarat State’s police control room.
India’s CNN News18 However, the TV channel said there were 220 passengers and 12 crews on the aircraft.
According to air traffic control at Ahmedabad Airport, the aircraft left at. 13:39 local time (0809 GMT) from runway 23. It gave a “Mayday” call that signaled an emergency, but then there was no response from the plane.
Flightradar24 also said it received the last signal from the planes seconds after it started.
“The aircraft involved is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner with registration VT-Anb,” it said.
Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The last deadly aircraft accident in India involved Air India Express, the airline’s cheap arm.
The airline’s Boeing-737 exceeds a “Table-Top” track in Kozhikode International Airport in southern India by 2020.
Shares of the Planemaker Boeing slipped into the US Trade Premarket on Thursday after the Ahmedabad aircraft accident involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Boeing shares fell 7.8% to $ 197.3 in trade in premarket. It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
