Ann Droid is a new BBC sitcom created by and starring Diane Morgan, best known for her roles as Philomena Cunk and Mandy, as well as projects such as Fatherland and After Life. Now she brings her impeccable comedic timing to a sci-fi family series and potentially another memorable character in Linda.
An-Droid – a clever play on words – begins when widow Sue’s son, Michael, presents her with a used robot carer, Linda, played by Morgan, to help her live independently. Although Sue is initially hesitant to accept the robot into her home, Linda’s unusual charm ultimately helps the pair develop an unexpected bond, despite her apparent lack of helpfulness.
In addition to Morgan’s trademark deadpan humor, the series also aims to explore serious themes of aging, loneliness and grief, as well as the growing impact of modern technology and AI on everyday life.
“I definitely think we’re going to have robots looking after us in the future. Whether they end up killing us or not, I can’t say,” Morgan said when asked about her thoughts on AI robots.
