The Boston Red Sox’s housecleaning, which saw manager Alex Cora and five others on the coaching staff dismissed amid a poor start to the 2026 MLB season, has a clubhouse veteran ticking off.
While it may not necessarily be about Cora’s firing in general, shortstop Trevor Story reportedly didn’t like the response the organization gave when addressing the big change with plenty of season left.
“Trevor Story said the Red Sox managers’ explanation this morning was not sufficient and that he intends to have more conversations with [general manager] Craig Breslow today,” tweeted Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.

Furthermore, Story said, “It’s up in the air what the true direction of the franchise is.
“If this shows us anything, it’s that we’re here to play baseball and that’s it. We don’t make any decisions. We don’t have any input into it,” Story added.

Breslow addressed reporters after the layoffs along with Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy before continuing their series with the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
“Acting today, it gives us 135 games ahead of us, so we have almost a full season to take advantage of this fresh start and ultimately compete for a division and deep postseason run the way we talked about it and envisioned and believed going into spring training,” Breslow told ESPN-17, sitting optimistically on Sunday.
The team split with Cora hitting coach Pete Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and major league strategy coach Joe Cronin.

Jason Varitek, the World Series-winning catcher with the Red Sox during his playing days, has also been reassigned to an unspecified role in the organization. He will no longer be a game planning and run prevention coach.
Chad Tracy, who managed Triple-A Worcester, now takes over as interim manager with the Red Sox.
“We believe in the group of players that we have in the clubhouse, down the hall, and we believe that a new direction is warranted, new voices and something that will allow us to start fresh,” Breslow added.
While they try to keep the outlook sunny, Story’s outlook is clouded, at least for now, as Boston continues its season down a path it didn’t foresee coming into the 2026 campaign.

Cora’s firing came after the Red Sox blanked the Orioles 17-1 Saturday afternoon — its biggest win of the season.
In his eight years as the Red Sox’s manager, Cora earned a 620-541 record while helping the team win a World Series title in his first season in 2018.
